Health control

Norwegian laws strictly regulate health controls and the monitoring of aquaculture sites. This includes brood stocks, hatcheries and sea farms.

Åkerblå meets all required standards for fish health control while simultaneously playing an important role as collaborator and supporter to the fish farming companies. Åkerblå is the first accredited fish health service in Norway with accreditation for health control!

Åkerblå offers risk based health control services for brood stock, hatcheries and sea farms for salmon, trout and other marine species. All Norwegian fish farms are required to have such controls.

Health control services are based on:

  • General competence of fish health and fish welfare
  • Information from personnel on site
  • Production data and daily registrations on site
  • Inspection (own observations)
  • Autopsy findings, pathological changes and histopathology
  • Analysis for infections
  • Analysis of water samples and the environment
  • We aim for a high standard of fish welfare primarily through preventive fish health services. Our fish health consultants are dedicated to specific farms and have expert knowledge of personnel and farm operations.

Health control reports

Fish health status is documented in a thorough report describing general health, environment, parasites, suspected diseases, diagnosis, mortality reasons and other relevant issues.  Advice for follow up action is also included in the report.

Prescriptions

All our employees in our fish health department are authorized to sign prescriptions. They are responsible for the use of pharmaceuticals, including vaccines. All medications prescribed are strictly regulated by law. We also strive to meet our customer’s demand to treat the fish as seldom as possible.

In order to prevent unnecessary suffering, to maintain good fish health and ensure the responsible use of pharmaceuticals while simultaneously guaranteeing food safety, the use of medicines are considered according to the following criteria:

  • Type of medicine
  • Preparation and available information
  • Prescription
  • Instruction of co-workers
  • Treatment and monitoring
  • Commitment to slaughter date (quarantine time)
